You'll want to scan the planet from orbit first, that'll save you a lot of headaches when running expeditions. Pay attention to those weather warnings and sentinel activity levels. Once you're going to land make sure you've got life support gel, di-hydrogen jelly, and some extra shield charges packed away, since you never know what you'll run into.
Importing a good multitool (if possible) and ship is really helpful before starting the expedition, and if you've got a combat multitool with decent upgrades that's even better. When you're down on the surface keep your distance from any hostile wildlife and use terrain to your advantage, maybe interesting to know that jetpacking to higher ground works great for avoiding those nasty creatures.
Always scan resources before mining them to avoid triggering sentinels, and focus on the mission objectives since time can be limited. The community usually leaves helpful bases and markers around important locations, so keep an eye out for those markers when you're exploring. Good idea to stay flexible with your approach though, since expeditions can throw some unexpected challenges your way.
Remember to keep your hazard protection topped up and carry some extra antimatter for emergency warps if things get too intense. You might want to stick near your ship at first until you get a feel for the planet's dangers, and don't forget scanning everything nets you some nice bonus resources.
