in single player how does this mechanic work

Let me walk you through how legendary resistance shapes those tough solo boss encounters, because it's really about adapting your whole approach. The key thing to understand is that bosses can basically say "nope" to your abilities three times per fight (this is due to that +10 bonus to saving throws they get), which means you've got to think differently about how you tackle these fights.
When you're running solo, you'll want to focus on abilities that don't rely on saving throws at first (magic missile is your friend here), because throwing your big spells right away is just asking to waste them. Something interesting to consider is that you can actually "burn" through those resistances strategically using smaller spells before unleashing your heavy hitters (those command spells work surprisingly well for this).
The whole solo experience really pushes you to build differently, and you might want to look at something like a ranger/rogue combo that can just tank through things, or focus on critical hits that ignore those pesky resistances entirely. Keep some speed potions handy though, because these fights tend to drag on
Environmental awareness becomes super crucial when you're alone – those legendary actions can absolutely wreck you if you're not careful. Good to know that some bosses, like our friend raphael, don't have counterspell, which means magic users can actually overwhelm him if they play it smart. And remember, not every boss even has legendary resistance – sometimes they've got other tricks up their sleeves, like ketheric with his phase changes.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a story-rich, party-based RPG set in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons, where your choices shape a tale of fellowship and betrayal, survival and sacrifice, and the lure of absolute power.
