To put it simply, you cant change your background once youve started unfortunately. I learned this the hard way when I tried to switch my character's background at Withers - turns out even though he can help you change pretty much everything else about your character, backgrounds are locked in. Makes sense when you think about it since its meant to be your characters history and all

The good news is you can still change up your class abilities and skills when you visit Withers at camp, which is pretty helpful if youre not happy with how your character plays. Just keep in mind that those background perks and skill proficiencies youve got are staying put. I actually think its kinda cool how it adds to the roleplaying aspect, since you cant just erase your characters past

If youre really not feeling your background choice, youll need to start fresh with a new character. Something interesting - those background choices actually matter quite a bit for dialogue options and skill checks throughout the game, so its worth taking your time during character creation. But hey dont stress too much about it - you can still roleplay your character however you want even if the mechanical stuff stays the same
