When facing wolves timing and positioning are absolutely critical. Watch for their stalking behavior - they'll circle with their head lowered before charging which gives you about 2-3 seconds to react. Your best defense window opens right as they start growling and moving sideways, that's when you want to ready whatever deterrent you're using. Marine flares work consistently giving you roughly 15 seconds of protection while regular flares buy you 8-10 seconds if timed properly. Keep your distance at about 20 meters, any closer triggers immediate charges.

For temporary area control, campfires are your safest bet since they create roughly a 10-meter safe zone as long as wolves can see the flames. Dropping meat or guts works too but you need to time it just before they enter charging distance - about 15 meters is perfect letting you slip past while they investigate. Really important detail: when wearing bear/wolf clothing, stay completely still for 3 seconds when wolves first spot you, gives that 20% scare chance the best opportunity to trigger.

If you're planning to take them out completely rifles need a clean broadside shot from 30+ meters, revolvers work better in panic situations at 10-15 meters but remember that 50/50 scare chance. Noisemakers are most effective when thrown directly between you and the wolf right as they start their charge pattern, creating about 5-7 seconds of confusion you can use to reposition or make your escape.
