The timing for environmental survival is super critical and needs some specific preparation depending on where you are. When trying to survive the desert areas make sure to get those water catchers set up right away you'll see a brief warning icon when dehydration kicks in but by then it's usually too late. The collectors need about 30 seconds to gather enough water so plan accordingly. For sandstorms, there's a distinct orange haze that appears about 15 seconds before they hit full force, giving you just enough time to get inside if you're watching carefully.
Underground bases are your best defense but positioning is key dig at least 3 foundations deep and reinforce the entrance with an airlock system using 2 doors minimum. The storms deal consistent damage every 2 seconds to exposed buildings, so during construction phase you'll want to work in short bursts between the damage ticks.
Temperature management requires precise timing too. Your health drops by 2 points every 3 seconds in extreme cold without proper gear, while desert heat depletes hydration 50% faster during peak daylight hours between 11:00 and 15:00 game time. Keep an eye on the top right indicators when they start flashing yellow you've got about 20 seconds to find shelter or apply countermeasures.
For resource gathering, high yield metal nodes spawn every 30 minutes in desert zones, cloth respawns every 15 minutes near water sources, and stone nodes have a 45 minute reset timer. Time your farming runs between weather events, and always carry enough materials for a quick 1 x 1 shelter with a roof it takes about 8 seconds to place if you've got the building plan ready.
Watch the weather transitions carefully storms have a 5 second warning period where the wind picks up before visibility drops to near zero. Keep your inventory organized with healing items in the first row for quick access when things go bad.
Good to know: planning ahead really makes the difference between survival and scrambling at the last second.
The only aim in Rust is to survive. Everything wants you to die - the island’s wildlife, other inhabitants, the environment, and other survivors. Do whatever it takes to last another night.

farming locations are highly preferred like those safe quarries. i cant really buy or trade atm because i just started playing and still getting familiar with the game. i probably would enjoy exploring a little more instead of straight up buying
