Game Review - by Dan Piparo
Hexen II picks up where Hexen left off. You have defeated the first two Serpent Riders, D'Sparil and Korax, and now you have to face Eidolon and his legions of doom. Players choose one of four character classes: Paladin, Crusader, Assassin, and Necromancer.
Each character class has its own different set of weapons, spells, and attack rates, and each has two to three special abilities that are gained and improved throughout the game using an experience system. This is what sets Hexen II apart from the other first-person shooters.
Storyline:
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse lurk in the shadows before you. They are Death, Pestilence, Famine, and War. They are the root of all that is evil. They are the least of your worries. The last known Serpent Rider, Eidolon, lives. As the Necromancer, the Assassin, the Crusader, or the Paladin, you must defeat the dark generals and their Hell-spawned legions before you can face the Archfiend and attempt to end his ravenous onslaught. Go in peace and you will surely die.
The Power of Quake:
Experience the Quake Engine's true polygon-based modeling for the most realistic and detailed environments ever seen in 3D gaming. Graphically, Hexen II is total eye candy. It's hard to concentrate on the game when you are in awe looking at the scenery.
Playing Hexen II with a 3-D accelerator will just make you melt into your chair. Raven has taken the Quake engine and cranked it up to an incredible level. The colors are bright and vibrant, unlike the dreary Quake.
Choose your Fate:
Possess distinct spells, powers and 32 new weapons. Throughout the game, your character increases in skill and power as they gain experience by defeating certain enemies and progressing through various levels. By going up levels, you will be able to attack more frequently and have better chances of hitting your opponent. This feature alone gives Hexen II amazing depth.
Mind-Blowing Environments:
Bludgeon your way through four demon-infested worlds through Medieval Egyptian, Mesoamerican, and Roman. Smash stained glass windows, collapse structural beams, and pulverize trees. You can punch out brick walls, trees, tombstones, tables, chairs, and bookshelves--pretty much everything on screen is fair game.
Multiplayer Capabilities To Die For:
Come face-to-face with Knight Archers, Were-Jaguars, Fire Imps, Skull Wizards, and much more. Go in with your friends, or go against enemies in a bloody Deathmatch. Up to 16 players can go at it via LAN and over the Internet.
