Game Review - by Mike Bradner
Vigilante 8 is a vehicular combat video game released in 1998 for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Game Boy Color. It is a spinoff of the PC game Interstate '76, and features several concepts (auto-vigilantes, the 1970s time frame, and specific fictional vehicle companies) carried over from that title.
Features:
Vigilante 8 has a simple way to configure controls. The need to configure your controller was really not needed. A really interesting feature is the combination for special attacks with weapons. This feature allows you to kill enemies quicker and easier but does open you up for attack.
Graphics:
This game has pretty nice graphics. A very nice feature in the game is the detail on the vehicles. The game that this is most comparable to would be something like Offroad Challenge. When I first started playing this game, it reminded me of it. The cars however are a little more detailed and the course that you do battle in have better graphics. The other thing I found interesting with the graphics was the framerate. Normally in N64 games framerate is not important, all games run at the same speed but, in Vigilante 8, it seems to move faster maybe do to the fact that the game takes advantage of the new expansion pack Nintendo put out. Overall, the graphics are nice.
Sound FX:
Sound in Vigilante 8 is average. There is really nothing special about it. You have the sound of the cars and the firing of weapons but, there is nothing that is extraordinary about it. It contains what you would expect in a game like this, nothing more, nothing less.
Gameplay:
Gameplay is what made this game good. It is such a cool thing to go around in a schoolbus blowing the hell out of everything and everybody. The movement of your car with relationship to others is quite good; there is no extreme movement that throws your aim off. Another nice option is the multiplayer aspect. You can either fight against each other, on separate teams or on the same team. What I really like was being on the same team and blowing everyone else up as quickly as we could. Gameplay overall was fun.
Overall:
Overall Vigilante 8 is a good game. It is like a lot of other destruction games where you go out and your soul purpose is demolishing anything that gets in your way. If you like these type of games you will really like Vigilante 8. If you have had enough of these games you may want to pass on this one. I liked the game and the multiplayer was fun. Overall, I enjoyed the game.
